these images are the result of random in-camera composition.
they stem from an interest in the possibilities of apparent connections or correspondences
between objects and / or concepts which often demonstrate no rational links.
references might include archaic alchemical practices and contemporary models of
alternative scientific philosophies, such as Quantum.
the genesis of the technique was an enquiry into the strange mind of the artist Paul
Cézanne, who seemed to experiment with multiple views of objects or landscapes,
realised as single, painted compositions.
however, this project entailed the use of a medium format camera which allowed
controlled multiple exposure; the 35mm cameras I have used for the last twenty
years cannot be controlled in this way.
i am also aware that subconscious dream imagery sometimes seems to behave in
a manner analogous to the chance juxtaposition of motifs, achieved by passing a roll
of film repeatedly through a small format camera.
photographic emulsion is the only medium i know of which is subtle enough to
capture the nuance and suggestivity of this subject matter.
